H1N1 Awareness
If you develop the following symptoms you are encouraged to seek medical attention:
- fever
- cough
- sore throat
- runny nose
- body aches
- headache
- chills and fatigue
How does H1N1 influenza spread?
- When a person with flu coughs or sneezes.
- Touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue every time you cough or sneeze. Throw the used tissue in the waste basket.
- If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve.
- Clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick, if possible.
- Stay healthy: eat nutritious foods, get enough sleep, and exercise.
- Stay home if you are sick with flu like symptoms for at least 24 hours after being free of fever.
- If you are a health care provider you need to stay home for 7 days after symptoms began or until your are symptom free for 24 hours
What should I do if I get sick?
If you become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, and stuffy nose, you should:
- Call your healthcare provider to determine if you need to be evaluated.
- Stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.
Is there a vaccine for the H1N1 flu?
Baldwin Area Medical Center has a limited supply of the nasal flu H1N1 vaccine. Since current supply is not adequate to meet the demand of all target groups, the state of Wisconsin recommends that the medical center vaccinates the following within the target groups:
Healthcare and emergency medical service personnel who have direct contact with patients, Children age 2 to 4 years old, Persons who live with or provide care for infants age 6 months or younger who are age 5 to 49 years.
